I missed it ! I missed TILT yesterday, just like I did last Thursday. I hope you guys don’t mind me doing TILF instead (that’s Things I Love Friday) to make up for it. I’ve had a busy week, busy but good, and here’s what’s been great about it.

    Azure Window - Gozo

Pescando a Gozo/ Fishing in Gozo

    Gozo
Last Tuesday we celebrated Independence Day, which means I had an extra long weekend which Andrew and I spent in Gozo. Malta’s sister island is really peaceful and has retained most of its rural character. We spend a few weekends a year there when we can and always come back feeling energised. It’s a pity it was already to cold to go swimming, but that’s okay. We had good food and wine, good books, a couple of DVDs and even more good food, like Hobz biz-zejt. Mmmm. Also, don’t you love these photos of Gozo which I found on Flickr? Clicking them will take you to the photographer’s page.

    Mooncake

    red bean paste agar-agar mooncake

    mmmmmm, mooncake

    中秋节的月饼,Mooncake(276)

    Mooncake
I am not the most adventurous eater in the world. I’m nothing like the magnificent Andrew Zimmern, who munches away happily on bugs and beaks. Yesterday, however, I had the opportunity to taste mooncake for the very first time, so I did. Mooncakes are Chinese semi-sweet pastries eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. They’re usually filled with lotus seed paste and have egg yolk in the middle to symbolise the moon. My verdict: I wasn’t crazy about the taste, but it’s certainly interesting. They are absolutely beautiful to look at, though. Have a look at the above Flickr photos.

    Notte Bianca
I’ll be taking part in Notte Bianca tomorrow. I’m singing a set with Renzo Spiteri on drums, Jes Psaila on guitar and Juan Camilleri on bass, at Europe House, St Paul’s Street, Valletta from 8 p.m.

    Hutch and me

    Me and Andrew

    Me and Rachel

    Sam, Danjel and Hutch

    Platinum Love launch party
The party was great and the first print issue of the magazine is AMAZING. You have to get your hands on a copy of it!

    The Guardian’s film challenge
The animation on this is incredible and it’s so fun to try and figure out what movies are being referenced. There are 26 in total; I’ve got 19 so far. What about you?

    Glee
Glee is back on TV! YAY! I am loving the new characters, especially Sunshine Corazon, who is so adorable. Rachel has a great recap (GLEECAP!) of season 2 episode one on her blog, here.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
I really wish I had read this book back when I was 15. It’s just such a good snapshot of what goes on in your head when you’re 15. I know I’m not the only person here who can relate to Charlie. I loved his description of the first time he read The Catcher in the Rye (I remember my first time too, and it’s still one of my absolute favourite books). Also, the drama, the intense hormones, friends, feeling ‘infinite’… do yourself a favour and read it if you haven’t. And if you know any teenagers, do them a favour and buy it for them.

    TILT: September 9

    Posted in: TILT

Despite the fact that my day hasn’t been going so well, I want to keep this blog a positive space. What better way to do this than by focusing on what has made my week a lovely one?

    Throwing a fantastic party
Last week, Andrew and I (with the help of the wonderful Max) threw a party for Jenny, who has just returned to Malta after spending a year studying in the UK. We all ended up dancing to Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and we were fabulous. Here’s to friends.

    Cooking
I’m back on my healthy eating diet this week, following a meal plan and everything, which means I prepare all of my meals now (even lunch – peanut  butter and jam on wholewheat bread, followed by a low fat white yoghurt and a banana). This means I cook quite a bit. It’s a good thing I like cooking. I find it therapeutic. Made a fantastic broccoli and mushroom pasta last night. Will post the recipe later.

    True Blood
Yep, still watching. We’re on season two now. Still enjoying it a lot. I look forward to it every day. After work, and after everything else that needs to be done is done, I make dinner and Andrew and I are glued to the screen for an hour or two. Oh, Sookie.

    The Bed Intruder Song
I was only introduced to this meme last week, but I’ve been in fits of laughter over it all week. If you don’t know what I’m on about, watch this first, then this. Once you’re done laughing, have a look at the cover versions of the song on YouTube. You can also buy a bed intruder t-shirt or, better yet, get an Antoine Dodson tattoo! Run and tell that, homeboy.

    Hyperbole and a Half
Definitely one of my favourite comics/blogs in the entire internets. Allie Brosh is awesome and all her posts have me literally falling off my chair, laughing.

What’s been making your week special?

Yep, it’s that time of the week again. I’ve had a pretty good week so far, though pretty busy. I’ve not had a chance to sleep in in a long time, and it looks like it’ll be another week or so before I’ll be able to stay in bed past 10 a.m. on the weekend. But that’s alright. I like being busy. It beats being bored. Here’s what’s made my week unboring.

    Hannah is visiting!
YAY! Remember when I talked about how my awesome friend Hannah was moving to Dublin? She’s been there for four months already and while Skype makes the distance bearable, I still miss her like crazy. So you can imagine how excited I am she’ll be visiting for a few days. It’ll be good to properly catch up with her a bit. And maybe this time I won’t bawl my eyes out at the end of the evening, because I’ll be the one visiting her in October – just over a month =D

    Gypsy Caravan
The girls and I got our hands on the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Technique DVD bundle and we had a long dance lesson yesterday where we learnt a few new moves. It was a really productive lesson and a pretty great workout. I’d like to dedicate an hour a day to dance and practice and stick to it as much as I can. Belly dance, especially tribal dance, is a very good workout and is perfect for connecting to, and strengthening, your core muscles, as well as toning up. Also, the costumes are fantastic.
Another thing I love about tribal belly dance is that it’s not danced for men. Egyptian and cabaret belly dance are beautiful to watch and sexualise the dancer; tribal belly dance is about dancing as a  sisterhood, taking turns to lead the group, connecting to the earth. I love that. It’s beautiful in a completely different way.

    True Blood Season 1
First of all, I have a big crush on the vampire Bill Compton. He’s got that repressed sexuality thing going, much like Jane Eyre’s Mr Rochester and Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Throw in a little bit of Wuthering Heights‘ Heathcliff’s passion into the mix and you have something good. And he’s a vampire. And not the silly, juvenile, shiny-skin Twilight type of vampire either. And Sookie Stackhouse, unlike Bella from Twilight is actually a compelling character.
We’re only about six episodes into the first season (long episodes ftw) but I’m already in love with this show. It’s clever, well-written, well-acted, well-directed. It has you laughing or smirking along in all the right places. It’s got romance, but romance that even cynics can stomach. Yes, I think it was a good idea watching this show.

    Cute stationery
It’s a stapler. Shaped like sushi. Do I really need to say more??

    TILT: August 26

    Posted in: TILT

You must excuse my recent lack of posting. I was in Gozo for the weekend, soaking up the sun, splashing about in the pool and being generally lazy. Of course I’m paying the price now as it’s taken me the whole week to get back on track. And now it’s Thursday again, so here’s what’s I’m loving this week.

    Hobz biz-Zejt
Pronounced ‘hops bizz zeyt’, this means ‘bread with oil’ in Maltese, but it’s so much more than that. Most Maltesers will tell you there is nothing better than Hobz biz-Zejt. Just picture this: you are sitting at a table by the pool surrounded by family. In the centre of the table is a large bowl full of slices of freshly-baked Maltese bread. It’s so fresh it’s still warm from the oven it was baked in. You take a large, thick, crusty slice and pour some olive oil and sprinkle some salt and pepper over it. You could eat it as is and it would taste fantastic. Resist the temptation; rub a large, juicy tomato over the bread, add some tuna and chopped olives, maybe even some fresh basil and capers. Eat. Wash down with a tall glass of ice-cold water. When you’re done, get back to sunbathing.

    Maxokk’s Torta tag-Gbejniet
This one is pronounced ‘torr-ta tag gbey-neet’, and the Gs here are soft, like the J in ‘jeans’. This translates to cheeselet pie, and that is just what it is: a crusty but soft pastry filled with Gozo cheeselets. And the ones made by Maxokk in Nadur, Gozo, are divine.

    The Moulettes
Last Friday, The Moulettes played a gig at Madliena Cottage, supported by Plato’s Dream Machine. To be honest, I hadn’t really heard of the band before them but I was pretty impressed. They’re a cross between folk music, pirate-inspired music and humour (as evidenced by their Cannibal Song – a song about ‘unrequited love and eating’, as they described it). They play a mix of instruments not usually found in contemporary music, like the cello and the bassoon, and they are musical storytellers. They’re sometimes melodramatic, but mostly fun. I’ll be watching out for them.

    The Eames Lounge Chair
A classic design which I’ve rediscovered and am lusting after. Can’t you just imagine yourself sitting on this in the middle of winter, by a roaring fireplace, doing crossword puzzles and sipping coffee? I wish I had the place for it in my flat (and I also wish I had the funds to buy one).

    \

    Sims 3
I go through phases when it comes to the Sims, but I’ve recently picked it up again and am enjoying it immensely =D

How’s your week been so far?

Another week’s almost over. I can’t believe how fast this year is whooshing by. August is already half over, which means it’ll be Christmas in just over four months.

But for now, it’s time to look back at the things that have been lovely to me this week.

    The Big Bang Theory
Yay! A sitcom for and about geeks and the socially inadept! With clever chicken jokes (Why did the chicken cross the Mobius strip? To get to the same side)! I watched seasons one and two last year and, while I liked the concept in the beginning, I began to tire of it toward the end. Sheldon is very smart, Penny is not smart. We get it. Ha. Ha. I was a little reluctant to watch season three but a friend recommended it and, well, we really did have nothing to watch (Andrew and I don’t watch TV shows: we absorb them). We watched all of season three in just under a week. And I don’t know what the writers changed this time around but I LOVED this season. I loved the chemistry between Penny and Leonard, Sheldon got funny and not just annoying, Howard got even slimier and Rajesh mocking the American accent was a TV highlight for me. Also, and I don’t know how they managed this, but I have a little crush on Johnny Galecki now.

    Weeds
Season 6 of Weeds has just started and I’m so excited about this! First of all, Nancy Botwin (played by Mary-Louise Parker) is one of my favourite TV characters ever. I love the fact she plays a woman who doesn’t fit into one little box, and isn’t either smart and ugly or dumb and pretty. She’s smart, very sexy, strong, funny and human. I love the dark humour in this show (because I tend to enjoy inappropriate jokes) and I also have a thing for Justin Kirk, who play’s Nancy’s brother in law, Andy Botwin. I can’t wait to see what happens this season, now that Shane’s turned a little psychotic and the family are on the run.

    Shabby Apple
I can’t believe I hadn’t seen this gorgeous online boutique until this week! I LOVE LOVE LOVE their dresses. I may even buy one (when the next paycheque comes).

Yep! It’s Thursday again. Here are the things that have been making my week a happy one.

Cherry tomatoes. Oh my goodness, yes! Cherry tomatoes have made my week a yummy one! I’m having them with EVERYTHING: in my salads, with tuna and olives; on my toast, with ham and cheese, instead of butter in the mornings; with mozzarella and sprinkled with pepper, as a snack.

Plums. Also yummy! You could make jam with them, or even put them in a pie and bake it and then eat it with cream and custard. But I don’t do that. No, I take four, wash them, and eat them. I don’t even take off the skin! So there!

Odd time signatures. In a recent rehearsal, we began messing around with the 5/4 signature – something I’d studied about in music theory lessons, and which I’d heard samples of here and there. However, I’ve never actively had to use it in any music or songs, so I’ve had some trouble adjusting to it. It is fantastic though, so all day I’ve been looking up songs in 5/4 and have fallen in love with Radiohead’s Morning Bell. I am determined to wrap my head around it and conquer 5/4!

Sun and swimming. I spent most of last Monday swimming and soaking up the sun with my friend, Alexia, who is awesome for inviting me :) I’m not Malta’s biggest fan (and that is definitely an understatement) but the place is perfect for long afternoons lolling around in the sun half asleep. And very few things are more relaxing than that.

This is a new regular section for this blog. It’s a meme I first discovered through Livejournal where, on Thursdays, many of my friends would post things that had made them happy that past week – or just in general.

And I think we all need a little something to brighten up our day sometimes, so here are the things that have been making me feel warm and fuzzy this week.

HBO’S Hung: Alright, so maybe ‘warm and fuzzy’ may not be an accurate description of how this show makes me feel. Andrew and I started watching it last Sunday and we’ve already devoured all of season 1. It’s lovely to discover another TV show which keeps me wanting more, especially now that all my favourite shows have taken a summer hiatus. Hung is about a man who loses everything – including his house in a fire – and decides to make a living selling his one huge, er, asset – or tool, if you will =D It tackles the subject of male prostitution – which is a topic people usually steer clear of. It’s also interesting to see the tables turned for once: male prostitute, female pimp, female clients. Apart from the fact that the actor who plays Ray is very, very good looking, the script is pretty good and mostly quotable.

My upcoming holiday: Tickets are booked, leave is booked, passport is ready and I am excited. In a couple of months I’ll be flying to Amsterdam to meet a couple of friends and watch Tori Amos play, accompanied by the Metropole orchestra. I’m grinning just thinking about it. I went to watch Tori Amos play in Como five years ago and it was one of the absolute best nights of my entire life. I can’t wait for that again. I might even decide to wait outside the venue for a meet and greet so I can talk to her again. What would I say? Not a clue. Maybe I would gush about how much I love her, like I did last time. Me? I’m the epitome of cool. The day after the concert I’ll be hopping on another flight to Dublin, where I’ll spend a couple of days with Hannah, who I miss so very much, and even meet up with my uncle (who is moving there soon) and his wife Debbie. I can’t wait to get away from Malta a little. God knows I need it. I’ve never been to Dublin so I’m pretty excited to discover a new place too.

Alexis Mabille: I only discovered this young French designer last week and I am hooked, man. First of all I love him because, well, look at him! That is one good-looking man! Secondly, his puts little bows on most of his clothes and his collections are made of dreams and lace and silk and other lovely things. They remind me of playing dress-up when I was a kid. I want to play dress-up again (which is probably why I’m an actress).

Moleskine: I love Moleskine. Really, I do. I’ve been a fan since I bought my first hardcover, plain, black reporter notebook. And today I received my very first soft cover notebook. I haven’t taken it out of the plastic yet – I don’t think I will for a while. I’m on a black hard cover lined notebook at the moment and it’s serving me just fine. Next, I’ve got the Sketchbook Project notebook to work on (my very first Moleskine cahier!). Still it’s nice to know there’s a lovely pad of empty pages just waiting for me to write on them. Now, to buy the perfect pen…

Tribal Belly Dance. I’ve not been to classes in a couple of months and things kind of fell apart for a while, but now the girls and I have figured something out and it looks like we’ll be starting again as of next week. I’m pretty excited about this. I love tribal belly dance. Been doing it for three years. It’s a great workout and it’s also masses of fun.

What has making you feel all better this week?
