I’m getting old. I know this because I look at kids today and my brain goes straight into a ‘when I was a kid…’ monologue. Growing up in the 90s was great. Sure, we didn’t have XBoxes or Wiis. We didn’t have Dora or Ben10. I didn’t even have a computer until I was about 10. But I look back on all the really cool things we 90s kids did have and I can’t help but think that today’s kids are really missing out.
We had Nickelodeon when it was cool
Sometimes, when I’m watching TV, I’ll tune into Nickelodeon to see what’s on and I’m almost always disappointed (except when the oldschool Rugrats is on). Back in my day, Nick was awesome. We had shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Alex Mack, Guts, Peewee’s Playhouse, Doug, Rocko’s Modern Life and Kablam. We had Legends of the Hidden Temple and Are You Afraid of the Dark. Guys, we had Gak!

We had great books
Who here remembers The Babysitter’s Club, Goosebumps, Point Horror and Sweet Valley High? Those books were really, really cool. Man, when I was a kid, reading was cool! I can’t stand meeting people younger than me who say they’ve never read a book like it’s something they’re proud of.

Pogs!
I remember spending all my school breaks playing Pogs. I had stacks and stacks of the things. Not to mention the amazing collection of Slammers I built up.

Our videogames rocked
Who didn’t love Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, the original Resident Evil and Tomb Raiders? What about Bust a Move? And I swear, to this day, NOBODY can beat me at Tekken 2 if I use Law.

Other TV shows
Nickelodeon can’t take all the credit. We had other great TV shows. I used to love watching Blossom and I had such a HUGE crush on Joey. What about Saved by the Bell (and none of that new class crap) , The Power Rangers and Hang Time? Man, I can still rap the opening to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The fashion
Jelly shoes, pony tails on the side of your head, fluffy scrunchies, beads in your hair,slap-on bracelets, neon leggings… we were so cool!

I never left the house without my Walkman
I had the coolest Walkman ever. Not only did it play my favourite cassettes, it also had a radio built in and you could play Tetris on it.

What was your favourite part about growing up in the 90s? Do you think kids today are better off?
